St Paul's Roof Restoration Project

For some years, efforts have been made to repair bad leaks in the Church Roof. Unfortunately
the outcome continued to be water entering the building and causing damage to the
plaster-work etc.
Last March, St Paul’s was awarded a Grant from English Heritage to partially
cover the cost of the roof and timber restoration work in the following areas of
the building: South Slopes of the Nave, Chancel, South Aisle, South Transept and
Vestry, plus the Bell Tower. The work, subject to our meeting English Heritage funding
requirements, is due to start August/September this year.
The grant was awarded in two Stages, requiring St Paul’s to raise approximately
£5,000 by January 2009 and £50,000 by March 2009. In order to acquire these sums
of money, applications have been made to a multitude of organisations which award
grants, at their discretion, to projects of this nature. Alongside this, various
Fund-Raising Events have been organised by St Paul’s, The Heritage Society
and the local community. God has blessed us greatly and we are now left with approximately
£4,700 to raise by March this year!
At this stage, we are restricted with regard to publicity by one of the major grant
givers, but it is hoped that soon we will be in a position to publicize details
of all of our benefactors both on this website and in the local press, in order
to thank them.
In the meantime our thanks go out to everyone at St Pauls and in the Community of
Chester Green for their wonderful efforts and generosity, and naturally to those organisations
who have granted us funding.
£2,500 now has to be raised for protection for the Organ, which of course
sits at the centre of the roofing project! The work consists of partial dismantling/re-assembly
and protective covering for the remaining part of the instrument. Whilst the Organ
is of great Historical interest, certain essential modifications made to it some
years ago have rendered it ineligible for grants from the main organisations we
were expecting to apply to.
